The Castle

Summary

Welcome to the traditional house located at the heart of the village of Emporio. Emporio is the largest village of Santorini, situated at the center of the south part of the island, at a distance of 12 kilometers from Fira. The house consists of one bedroom, one dining room, kitchen, a washroom with shower, a balcony and a big garden.

The space

The house is built inside the area of Kastelli (=castle), which is ideal for guests who want to live in a traditional neighborhood of the island. The house offers a nice view of the sea, a part of the village of Emporio and the mountain Profitis Ilias.

In 1937, Jean Paul Sartre stayed in this very house along with Simone de Beauvoir. His holidays in the village of Emporio impressed him a lot and inspired him some of the scenes of ‘The Flies’ (Les Mouches) play, because of the ambience of the old medieval castle, the old churches and the unique architecture.

Guest Access

Fully equipped kitchen with all appliances, a dining room with a kitchen table, chairs and a couch are provided to make you feel like home. Free Wi-Fi, linens, bath amenities, a balcony with table and chairs and a garden with trees and plants available.

The house doesn't have Air Conditioning, because the way it's built, it doesn't need one. The windows and doors provide natural air circulation, which is essential to summertime relief.

Other things to note

The village of Emporio is built in the lowlands, at the foot of Profitis Ilias Mountain. The village was probably named Emporio (=trade) because it used to be the center of the commercial affairs in the past.

The neighbourhood

The big attraction of Emporio is the medieval Kasteli, one of the five fortified castles of Santorini. Inside the castle there is a church that dates back to the 16th century or earlier. In close distance lies the Tower of Nimborio (The “Goulas”), a square building that was used as a watchtower and a refuge. Restaurants, shops, bars and a bus stop are within walking distance from the house (200 meters, which is about 5 minutes walking time).

The bus stop, connecting the village of Emporio with Fira (main town of Santorini) and the beaches surrounding Emporio, is the easiest way to move around the island. There is also a free parking area very close to the house, only 5 minutes walking distance.
